I continue to live within walking distance of Yorktown in the East Falls Church neighborhood of Arlington. From our Yorktown graduation on June 14, 1968 I went on to Duke University, graduating in 1972 with a BA in Political Science. Since then I've had the opportunity to circumnavigate the globe some 5 times with some intriguing stops along the way ranging from Baghdad to Bulgaria to Bali to Bangkok to Beijing; Diego Garcia to Delhi; Kathmandu to Kiev to Colombo to Cambodia; Istanbul to Israel to Indonesia to Italy; Vientiane to Vietnam; and all over China -- with numerous points (and years) in between. Forty years ago I wrote my piece for our 10th Reunion Book in a small village in Northeast Thailand where I lived-- part of my 6+ years in the Peace Corps eating bugs and birds while first teaching secondary school English in a small town on the Mekong River and subsequently, as an agricultural extension agent, teaching farmers improved methods of rearing hybrid silkworms and producing justly famous Thai silk. Two years after returning to the U.S., and armed with a graduate degree in public sector management/international affairs from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University, I was selected a Presidential Management Intern by the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) later becoming Country Director for Iran and Iraq, and moving to subsequent assignments as Director for India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka and then Director for North African Affairs. My career in OSD also included positions coordinating Defense Department support for UN peacekeeping missions and the provision of humanitarian assistance to countries overseas as well as serving for several years with the OSD Cooperative Threat Reduction Program, making frequent trips to Russia and Ukraine to assist those countries in eliminating Cold War weapons of mass destruction originally intended for use against the United States. I retired in October 2015 after 42 years of Federal service. Infected by the travel bug, I was off and running again in 2016-2017, spending 8 months traveling solo all over Southeast Asia. And -- oh yes -- along the way I married my Thai girfriend of 10 years in 1985 -- and divorced 23 years later. Our daughter, now 33 and a 2003 Yorktown graduate, in comparison, makes everything I've written above seem insignificant. |

Without a speck of foresight that my degree would be absolutely useless, I received a BA in French in 1972. Two months later, I was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army. I met my husband at Ft. Bragg, NC and we were married in July 1973. We got a joint assignment to Germany less than a year later and stayed for 3 years. I picked up German quickly and my knowledge of French was only helpful when we traveled to France and Belgium! We had a second overseas assignment in Engand, from 1987-1990. My husband retired from the Army in 1993, after his final assignment at the Pentagon. I had a daughter in 1976 and a son in 1977. My daughter, son-in-law, and 2 grandchildren live in Fairfax, VA. Since 2002, my son has lived in NYC. He met his wife up there. They love NYC and are expecting a baby girl in early September 2018. Once the kids were in elementary school, I got a BS in Psychology and an MSW (Master of Social Work). I had a 30 year career in Social Work. Loved being a Therapist, but changed gears in 2002 and was a Utilization Review Analyst until I retired. In Jan 1999, my husband and I separated/divorced. I moved to Atlanta and spent 3 years enjoying my 2nd Adolescence. Two months after 9/11, I moved back to this area to be close to family. I retired in 2015 and life is great! |

My husband Dale and I are looking forward to the YHS 50th Reunion! We recently attended his 50th in Sac City, Iowa and we had so much fun that we thought we'd try mine. I graduated f rom Mary Washington College in 1971 and married my high school boyfriend, Jim Wilson. We have two children together--Andy and Kelly. We divorced in 1987. I returned to graduate school and earned a PhD in English Composition in 1990 from Virginia Tech. The children and I made the choice to move to Iowa where I spent my career at Buena Vista University, a small, private school, much like Mary Washington. BVU was a wonderful place to work and my children were able to experience an ideal childhood. In 2000, I married the love of my life, Dale Petersen. My "bonus child" was his son Aaron and now we are parents to three children and five grandchildren. Dalei was on the City Council in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa and soon began three unapposed terms as Mayor of our town. We are now both retired, but we continue to be involved in our church and in our community. I continue to teach English at a local community college and also for a major hospital college in our community, recently beginning my 47th year of teaching English. I love the classroom, living in a small town, and being a wife, mother and grandmother. I never planned to leave Virginia, but when you make plans, God laughs. Smalll town Iowa has provided my children and me with a wonderful life. If you are ever near Sioux City, Iowa, please drop by for a visit. |

I don't think I'll be able to attend the reunion, but it is interesting seeing classmates from high school 50 years later. I'm happily married with three married children and four grandchildren (so far) ranging in age from 2 to 21. I hope you all have a blast at the reunion. Paul |

Short version.....2 husbands, 2 careers, 3 children, 3 degrees, 30 years in Alaska and now 16 years in Montana. Extended version: After high school, college....North Carolina State University. Married a 2nd Lt whom I met in college. After being stationed at Fort Richardson, Alaska, he went to Vietnam. I returned to Raleigh with our infant son and finished my undergraduate degree. A new career for him as a biologist brought us back to Anchorage. Our second son was born and we spent every summer fishing the Kenai River! My new career began after I got my M. Ed. in Counseling Psychology. I was a high school guidance counselor for 25 years. Loved my job! Not so much my husband....thus my first marriage ended in divorce after 20 years. I was lucky to find love again and John and I have been happily married for 25 years. We had a miracle baby in 1993, a daughter, who will turn 25 in Sept. Yep....I was 43 when she was born! John was 48. Our friends were becoming grandparents when we were teaching a baby how to walk! Kept us young though! We retired and left Alaska in 2001, traveled the western states for a year, home schooling a 2nd grader in a 5th wheel RV. I think I forever screwed her up in telling time! 2nd grade is not easy! We landed on a ranch outside of Missoula, built a house, and after one year, I knew I was not a country girl. I decided to go to law school in Missoula and upon passing the bar, worked for the City Attorney’s office, then an Estate Planning Law Firm, and then shingled up (worked solo) from home. Now, I take referrals for wills and estate planning, etc., and manage our rental properties. So I am more retired than not as I have the luxury to set my own schedule. My grown sons live in Portland and Olympia, Wa so I see them several times a year. My best friend and I go to Kauai every Feb to March....yep....finally got tired of all that snow! Travel is always on my planning list. Now looking at a bike and barge trip through Germany next Spring. In the meantime, my husband and I bike, kayak, and moderate hiking. Montana is a great place for all outdoor activities....except during fire season, which seems to get worse every year. Fortunately no fires near the ranch this year nor near our house in Missoula. I have never attended a reunion so am looking forward to attending this one....egad.... our 50th!! I don’t expect many people will know me as I only attended Yorktown for 3/4 of my junior year and all of my senior year. But I remember people from the Variety Show and from Mr. Belair’s history class....he kicked me out one time! Safe travels to all. See you in September! |

Comment: 1968 Forward: Yorktown got me through freshman college studies with scarcely cracking a book. 19 moves, 3 continents, 4 countries & 8 states later, I’m “Saved,” have 4 Academic degrees, Commercial pilot & Master Aviator ratings and 3 retirements. I’m a Volunteer. I failed at marriage but have one Son, a miracle child and Georgia Tech honor grad. I’m alive, aging, blessed and attempting to nourish my soul. |
