Chris Carley

Christopher Allen Carley died of pneumonia on January 15, 2014. He was born the second son of John W. and Alice U. Carley in Fort Bragg, N.C. on January 31, 1950.

Growing up as military child, he moved all over the country and also lived in Germany. Chris Carley graduated from Yorktown High School in Arlington, Va. He later attended the American College in Paris, France and the University of Denver in Colorado from 1968 to 1971. He worked as a disc jockey at the Universiy of Denver radio station.

The primary loves of Chris’ life were his music and his spiritual quest. He was known by family and friends as “cosmo” based on his interest in the cosmic universe. He wrote more than one hundred songs, sang and played the guitar. He studied voice with professional singer, Roula Kalapouthaikis, in Berlin in the early 1970s, while his parents were stationed in Germany. Chris performed in several concerts, plays, and musicals in Berlin. He loved going to Austria to visit his grandparents. He was fluent in German and French. He also was a participant in “youth with a mission” in Lausanne Switzerland.

Chris moved to the Monterey peninsula in 1978 and resided in the local area since then, including living in Salinas in recent years. After moving to Monterey, he attended MPC studying psychology and eastern religion. He studied and embraced all religions. He enjoyed services at the Church of the Wayfarer in Carmel. He struggled with mental health issues most of his adult life and, therefore, his potential was not fully realized. Yet he continued to pursue his loves, music and spiritual exploration. Chris was creative, imaginative, and generous and had natural charm.

Chris was briefly married to Louise Lally in Denver. He leaves behind his parents of Carmel, Ca, his brother Michael and sister-in-law Georgia of Fairfax, Va, niece Erica Carley Cayes and husband Dan Dayes, nephew Jeffrey Carley and several cousins across the us and Austria. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

In a school filled with kids trying desperately to fit in, Chris did not give a "sh....t." He was the most well balanced and sanest person I knew. Long live Cosmic Chris Carley.
