Where did all these years go???  Yikes!  It is quite evident that a lot of thought and effort has gone into the planning of our 50th reunion and the construction of this website!   Thanks to all of you who have been doing the work!

I have really enjoyed reading the online profiles.  It is interesting to see that there are lots of common threads through our stories and lots of different paths that we have taken.

Unlike many of you, I did not arrive in Arlington until my 10th grade year.  At that point, it was my eleventh move as a child.  Yes, a military family member!
After Yorktown, I went to Wilson College (Time Magazine wrote that year that students who went to Wilson were the seven sister rejects!).

During school breaks, I worked at Powhatan (skilled nursing facility) where I met my husband, Larry.  Not a patient!   He was working there while he was going to college.  We got married my junior year and have been married 46 years.  Since I vowed never to marry someone in the military because of the moving, I assumed that we would stay in the DC area.

Fourteen moves later…  Larry worked for the Veterans Administration and so our moves were tied to his career as a hospital administrator.  I worked in education as a teacher, administrator and later worked as a teacher trainer in various states and school districts.  During one of our times back in the DC area, I taught as an adjunct professor at GWU while teaching at McLean High School.  I was also affiliated with the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning and spent many years working with them on teacher training and research.  I am glad I chose the profession and am glad to be out now!

Larry and I are now retired in Pawleys Island, SC.  We enjoy boating, golfing, crabbing and fishing (Larry not me!).  While he fishes, I volunteer at the Family Justice Center whose mission is to support victims of domestic violence.  We also spend quite a bit of time traveling.  We come to DC often as my parents live in Potomac Falls and Jim, my brother, (Class of 1971) is in Vienna.

Abby Sandling (Snell) and I get together frequently.  Last summer, while at the ocean for a few days, we promised each other we would do our profiles when we got home!  We didn’t!   Last week, when we were together, we vowed to get them done by the weekend!   So here it is!  See all of you at the reunion!

Duke University Professor www.stat.duke.edu/~rlw/ Married 2
After Yorktown I headed north to Cornell U for college, following my sister Linda (Y'66), with a made-up major in "mythology", part anthropology and part comparative lit.  Turns out I wasn't very good at that, but the math-physics gig worked out so I went to Princeton to get a PhD in math.  I met my wife Ruta there (at first she thought I was studying music--- I didn't clear that up for a while, since not EVERY girl thinks math guys are great catches).  I took my only job offer, as a prof at Duke--- then in mathematics, now statistics.  After 40 years I still love my first job.  I do some theoretical work and collaborate with others on some f un applications--- recent ones include predicting volcanic risk, deciphering signals from gravity waves and from gamma ray bursts, studying the quark-gluon plasma that forms in relativistic heavy ion collisions at CERN, and estimating the numbers of birds and bats killed at wind turbine farms.  Looking forward to seeing everyone at the reunion! I am so glad we are having a reunion! Looking forward to reconnecting. I left Arlington and headed to Dallas, TX to attend SMU. A year later I was married, then finished my degree in music. I  promptly went to work as a social worker--a career that took me from public welfare work to clinical social work and on to higher education. Finished MSW in Mississippi, had 2 great kids, divorced after 23 years, finished my PhD in Idaho, remarried, gaining two more great kids. Taught social work in North Dakota and Arizona State; retired from academe and finished my career back in DC area working for AAHRPP (human research protection). I continue to do some research, consulting on accreditation issues, and splitting my time between AZ and SD,  enjoying 7 grandkids and a great dog. My husband Bob and I enjoy traveling. I attended his 50th a few years ago-- class of '65 from a small town where the class had 65 members! I can't wait to bring him to ours. Special thanks for this site so I can brush up on who's who!!
